The InS:PIRE programme team in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at University Hospital Crosshouse were delighted to receive a very generous donation from the family of a patient who had been cared for in the unit.

The family of Ellen Watson from Kilmarnock held a memorial day at Townholm Bowling club in Kilmarnock on Saturday 12 August, and raised a staggering £510. Ellen’s niece, Fiona Johnston, visited the unit to present the donation.

Fiona Johnston said, “Ellen (my aunt) was a patient in ICU in 2019. Her husband, Tommy, and family will never forget the kindness and compassion that was shown to them from all members of the ICU team. Although Ellen did not receive care from the InS:PIRE programme, the family would like to contribute to resources which will support other people in their recovery.”

Pauline Murray, Critical Care Recovery Co-Ordinator added, “We are grateful to receive this generous gift from Ellen’s family and that they still are thinking of us after four years. The donation will help us to continue to support our InS:PIRE programme and also allow us to buy rehab equipment for patients currently in ICU.”

InS:PIRE is a multidisciplinary team from different disciplines each providing specific services to patients for example, physiotherapists, pharmacists, nurses, occupational therapists, psychologist and consultants.  They help to identify common physical, psychological and social issues that patients may have developed as a result of their or their loved one’s stay in Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
