Green health members spot some local wildlife and plants in North Ayrshire

NHS Ayrshire & Arran, in partnership with The Conservation Volunteers (TCV), North Ayrshire Green Health Partnership and Green Health South Ayrshire, are offering weekly green health activities on their hospital sites in North and South Ayrshire.

Green health activity is spending time in nature and greenspaces to improve your health and wellbeing. It brings together the wellbeing of people and the environment and includes walking, cycling, gardening, practical conservation, outdoor learning and play and active travel.

A number of different walking and ‘green gym’ sessions are now available on a weekly basis at Ayrshire Central Hospital in Irvine, Ailsa Hospital and University Hospital Ayr. Green gym sessions are group based outdoor activities with a purpose such as gardening, growing, practical conservation, citizen science activities to monitor biodiversity and basic path maintenance. The walking sessions vary in distance and pace and accommodate the needs and abilities of those participating.

Lynne McNiven, NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Director of Public Health, said: “As an organisation we are committed to using our green spaces to improve health and wellbeing and increase biodiversity and sustainability. The physical and mental health benefits of getting outside in the fresh air for some gentle exercise are well known. Our weekly activities are a great way to enjoy nature and meet new people while also being active. We would love for staff, patients, visitors and members of the local community to come along as a way to improve their health and wellbeing and have fun – everyone is welcome.”

Fiona McGrevey, Operations Leader for TCV, added: “We’re excited to offer these wellbeing sessions as a welcoming space for everyone, and no experience is necessary. With all equipment provided, participants can enjoy activities like planting hedges and trees, improving wild flower meadows, taking relaxing nature walks, and spotting local wildlife. It’s a fantastic opportunity to connect with nature, learn about the environment, and nurture your wellbeing at the same time.”
