What we do
Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) and Assistants (SLTAs) work in:
- hospitals (inpatients and outpatients)
- community clinics
- family centres
- schools
- nurseries
- day centres
- people’s own homes
They also increasingly work across communities.
The role of SLTs
SLTs support adults, children and their families, as well as other professionals and agencies. They help to reduce the impact that speech, language, communication, and swallowing difficulties have on daily life.
We help people to reach their best potential when:
- communicating
- eating, drinking and swallowing
We also help relatives, carers and other people to better understand each individual’s needs and how to manage them in their own environments
As SLTs, we provide:
- reassurance
- advice
- information about other services
- where appropriate, assessment and intervention
Who we work with
We work in partnership with:
- the East, North and South Health and Social Care Partnerships
- local education departments
- care providers
- voluntary and charitable organizations
