Minor Injuries Service

For minor injuries such as cuts that may need stitches, broken bones, sprains and minor burns please call 111 and ask for the Minor Injury Unit (MIU) service. NHS 24 will provide you with advice on next steps, which may include a virtual or telephone consultation, and/or a face-to-face appointment at one of our MIUs. (Please note the time given to attend MIU by 111 / NHS24 is not an actual appointment time, but a time slot, so you may not get seen at that time). All those attending MIU must book in at Emergency Department reception first.

If you are referred to the MIU, your assessment will be carried out by a team of highly experienced staff, who will give you quick access to health information, advice and treatment. Treatment includes being able to arrange x-rays if required, apply plasters or splints, stitching and dressing wounds. NHS Ayrshire & Arran provides minor injuries services from University Hospital Ayr, University Hospital Crosshouse, Arran War Memorial Hospital and Girvan Community Hospital.

What can be treated at a Minor Injuries Unit?

  • Cuts, wounds (including thoughts that may need stitches) and bruising
  • Minor burns and scalds
  • Sprains, minor injuries or broken bones – in legs below the knee, and arms below the shoulder, where you can bear the weight through your foot or move your fingers (our experienced staff can arrange x-rays and apply plaster if required)
  • Insect or other animal bites
  • Tetanus immunisation after an injury (if indicated)
  • Minor head injury – where there has been no loss of consciousness or vomiting, and no residual symptoms, for example, headache, nausea, visual disturbance, dizziness or any other symptom of concussion
  • Removal of foreign bodies from eyes, nose or ears
  • Nose injuries and broken noses

For stomach upsets, coughs or a high temperature then self-care, pharmacy or your GP is the answer. You should NOT go to an MIU for treatment. An MIU does NOT deal with illnesses.

Where can I find my nearest MIU?
