About the Pain Management Service

Persistent Pain has a considerable impact on the quality of life for many people in Scotland. Approximately 800,000 people across Scotland are affected by persistent pain to varying degrees, and it can result in significant suffering for both those directly affected and those close to them.

The Pain Management Service in NHS Ayrshire & Arran is a multi-disciplinary team, which offers a range of different approaches with the aim of improving the lives of people with persistent pain.

Our values are a holistic person-centred approach to empower people to improve their quality of life while living with a long term pain condition.

What is the Pain Management Service?

Referral criteria

Referrals to the pain management service can only be made by General Practitioners (GPs), Hospital based Consultants/Doctors and Allied Health Professionals located in NHS Ayrshire & Arran.

Referrals from GPs should be made via an electronic referral through the SCI gateway system.

Referrals for hospital based Consultants/Doctors should be made by the electronic referral system and sent to the pain management service.

Referrals from Allied Health Professionals (AHP’s) should be generated from the AHP referral form and sent to the pain management Physiotherapists.
